This research offers a comprehensive cost-benefit analysis examining the impact of scaling up midwifery services in Morocco, a representative low- and middle-income country (LMIC). The authors used the Lives Saved Tool (LiST) to estimate the value of investing in 760 additional midwives annually from 2021 to 2030. They found that this investment will result in universal health coverage for maternity and newborn care, save approximately 120,000 lives (maternal, neonatal, and stillbirths), and return $10.15 billion in economic benefits. With a cost-benefit ratio of 15.91, calculated thus, the authors strongly advocate for more midwifery funding as an exceptionally cost-effective intervention to achieve Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 3: Good Health and Well-being. This research is particularly relevant to global initiatives to promote maternal health, particularly in resource-poor settings. It underlines the pivotal, if much-underestimated, role of midwives in reducing maternal and neonatal mortality. By framing health outcomes economically, the study presents a compelling case for policymakers and global development organizations to prioritize midwifery training, recruitment, and deployment.
